Anubis, the Jackal-headed guardian of the dead.

He was never just a god of embalming. He was the Watcher at the Threshold, the one who stood between breath and silence, between the heartbeat and the stillness that follows. It is said that when a soul left the body, it did not rise to the afterlife unescorted. It walked with Anubis — and not all souls returned from that path.

But there is one tale, lost in fragments of temple walls and half-burned scrolls, that tells of a statue of Anubis unlike any other.

It was not placed inside a tomb, but at the gates of a forbidden chamber beneath the sands of Saqqara — a chamber said to contain a book written by the gods, with words so powerful, they could awaken the dead or silence the living. To protect it, the high priests summoned Anubis not with prayers, but with sacrifice. They did not call upon his image — they bound part of his essence into a figure of obsidian, sealing it with spells no one dared read aloud.

This statue was never meant to be seen by mortal eyes. It stood in darkness for centuries… until one day, it disappeared.
